Due to Michael's inappropriate workplace comments, the office staff must sit through a seminar on diversity and racial tolerance. Offended at having to give up control, Michael leads his own workshop on the topic and manages to offend everyone even further. Meanwhile, Jim tries to make his biggest sale of the year.

Michael, who doesn't want to risk being unpopular with the staff, delegates the job of choosing a cheaper health care plan to Dwight. When Dwight begins to ask the staff personal medical questions, Jim and Pam fight back.

When the staff hears rumors that the Scranton branch will be downsized, Michael tries to distract everyone by throwing a birthday party even though the nearest birthday is a month away. Dwight, trying to protect himself from the downsizing, tries to forge an alliance with Jim. Meanwhile, Michael surprises everyone by pledging a very generous amount to a charity event.
